Minister: Bulgaria To Build 2 New Prisons Next Year
Bulgaria plans to start building two new prisons next year, Justice Minister Miglena Tacheva told Bulgarian state radio BNR on Sunday.
One prison will be built near the Black Sea port of Varna, on a land plot spanning 19 hectares, while the other one is planned to be in the neighbourhood of capital Sofia.
The ministry plans to build the two prisons using public-private partnerships, Tacheva added.
All Bulgarian prisons date back to the Communist era, with no new facilities built over the past 17 years and little money allocated to repair and upgrade the existing ones.

"Otherwise I will blame the police not only of failing to do its job, but also of boycotting my orders," Borissov said.

Bulgaria Introduces Hotline 112 for All Distress Calls by 2009
Bulgaria's government decided to introduce a network of top-notch emergency centres for monitoring all distress calls by the end of its term in 2009.
Citizens won't have to remember several emergency numbers anymore, as all calls going to the ambulances, police and fire brigades will be directed to telephone number 112. The mountain rescue teams and the Red Cross will also be covered at a later stage.
Emergency response units are expected to be relieved, because the centres will be able to sift out pranks that currently account for 80% of the calls.
A pilot project was launched in Southwestern Bulgaria in the summer of this year. Citizens may dial 0800 20-112 free of charge and alert about natural disasters they have witnessed or become a victim of. All incoming calls are automatically registered and recorded.
